You're looking to take the pacifist route, I understand that. But you must realize that the longer this happens, the more likely people will want to take matters into their own hands.
So perhaps your goal should be finding a way to prevent the murders themselves, or find out why they're occurring in the first place, rather than try to stop the inevitable aftermath.

That would be wise. You realize people get swept up in the absurdity of the trial, so they may forget anyhow. If you're looking for something to do, perhaps you can start thinking of a way to ensure you capture the right person should they act. This is the best advice I can give you for now.
