[they're actual eyes! sometimes one will just disappear, or one will come into being where there wasn't one a moment ago. occasionally one blinks open to look at him.
also they had heart-shaped pupils earlier i feel i have to specify this.]
Oh, you don't have to introduce me-! I'm a researcher. Um, of the supernatural, but-- I study how it all intersects with the mundane world too. [he's perked up a little, now, clearly interested.] But I want to know about the science in your world, it doesn't sound like anything I'm used to.
This just makes Luca want to experiment more and see what makes them get heart-shaped pupils. Luca has a guess but he still needs to test his hypothesis.]
It sounds like you might like the branch of science I study, then. Others have compared it to magic, even if it is decidedly a field of scientific study in my world.
Well, they say that they're just about indistinguishable from each other, at certain points.
[he props himself just enough to lean on one elbow, chin propped in his palm.]
If you don't mind explaining it sometime, then-- I'd rather learn it from you than from our whole, you know, thing where we know stuff about you guys. I don't have all the details on everything.
We know things about you, thanks to being Avatars. I try not to, uh, dig too deep? Feels a little invasive, defeats the purpose of talking to you guys.
[he shrugs one shoulder, there.]
But I kind of have the basics of your life-- sorry if that's weird, I really swear I tried not to get too many details.
[He sounds vaguely annoyed as he talks, but Envy does get an answer.]
It was a marriage of convenience to give her an heir to her family's business while I myself lack the social clout to stage a takeover. And it wouldn't have worked anyway because I prefer men.
-oh. Oh, okay-- I guess marrying guys might not be a thing where you're from, huh.
[he has the decency to look kind of sheepish about it, at least.]
In that case, though, I mean... it's one thing if you're doing this when you have an actual relationship, but if it's just a convenience thing then this isn't harming anyone, right?
Well no, of course not. Marriage is about producing children and strengthening family politics. Why would two men ever get married?
[He. Has some rather archaic views on marriage. I'm sorry he's like this.]
Admittedly I should try to be a good husband to Carmen, but the argument over if fidelity was vital to being a good husband has always been between us. It's not like I leave her or our son destitute.
Because they wanted to...? I mean, there are still marriages like you described where I'm from, but it's usually seen as something you do for love, not just convenience.
[it sounds like a difficult situation, to say the least.]
I'm guessing it's not easy to just, uh, separate either, so... it sounds like you're doing what you can, to me?
Technically divorce exists, but I can't do that to her. It would ruin her reputation, and reputation is everything where we're from. It's better for her to have a 'chronically absent' husband who lives in another country and quietly fools around than it is to be divorced.
...you know, I don't know. I can't think of any meaningful way to change that without ruining at least one person's life. And if I have to destroy Carmen or Giovanni's lives to do it, then I don't want it.
[He may not get along with his wife but he still feels responsible for her.]
Well- you might be able to come up with something, so I wouldn't rule it out. There's a lot of potential things to be gained, in a place like this. Maybe the chance to have a different kind of relationship is one of them.
[but he does sound like he approves of the answer, at least. good to know luca's more responsible than that.]
[He does have some ideas, but they're just that: ideas.
"Disappearing mysteriously and being presumed dead" might be the nicest thing he could do for both of them though, of the things he could do that don't involve his own death.]

[He's going to peek at any of those green eyes he can see now. Are they actual eyes, or are they tattoos like the one Luca has on his hand?]
I could introduce you to a world of science, perhaps.

"the thing where we know stuff about you guys".
[Luca does not remember this part. If they were told it before and I'm being a dumbass then we're going to say he has sex brain and forgot.]

But I kind of have the basics of your life-- sorry if that's weird, I really swear I tried not to get too many details.

Thank you for not being too nosy, I suppose. I'm sure the basics of my life aren't too horrible.

[envy flashes him a little grin.]

[A fact he hasn't directly told anyone yet. Any sex he has is adultery so technically it's all indulging in his vice right???]
no subject
[sure, maybe he is aiding in that adultery, but he's not involved in the relationship.]
no subject
Well, thank you for that. I do appreciate that you're trying not to violate my privacy.
no subject
[he nods, there- but he does pause a moment, considering.]
If it's nothing you want to talk about, just tell me, but- was it just not working out for you, or?
