Technically divorce exists, but I can't do that to her. It would ruin her reputation, and reputation is everything where we're from. It's better for her to have a 'chronically absent' husband who lives in another country and quietly fools around than it is to be divorced.

...you know, I don't know. I can't think of any meaningful way to change that without ruining at least one person's life. And if I have to destroy Carmen or Giovanni's lives to do it, then I don't want it.

[He does have some ideas, but they're just that: ideas.

"Disappearing mysteriously and being presumed dead" might be the nicest thing he could do for both of them though, of the things he could do that don't involve his own death.
