But I suspect it's because of a 'lust for knowledge' as well. I do bury myself in the sciences, and I am not satisfied until I have learned everything I can.

Sometimes even beyond death one continues to learn. As I understand it your sfeer thing is a science, but what else have you studied in the past?

Isn't death supposed to be the end of things?

It's supposed to be. But in some cases there are ways those who have died continue to learn and have influence upon the living.

Huh. Now there is an idea. Do you know if that's possible for the two who died recently?

That I do not. I don't have much experience in the way of communicating with the dead.

And I suppose none of your fellow avatars do either?

Are you a man of science as well? Or woman, or...whatever you may be.

Not directly. Not really. But the things I have interest in are heavily involved in science. I can appreciate logic and facts more than ideals and make-believe.

That makes two of us. Science is important to me because you can reliably predict results. Or, when things to go awry, you can trace back the source and figure out just what went wrong. Even mistakes are a learning experience.

Magic is just...magic. There's no logic to it, it just happens.

I prefer not to make mistakes, but I understand your point. [mistakes are for other people.

The lack of logic is what makes it harder to predict and hard to take seriously.

Besides, the books on the sciences are far more interesting than magic.

While I can't say I've read many books on magic, that's something we can agree on. I've always found it interesting to see what forms of science influence others.

Indeed. When I'm not working, it's one of my favorite hobbies. I was sure to get a bookshelf and fill it up as quickly as I could, as soon as I was an adult and living on my own.

Mine as well, when there's time. [they seem like they might stop there, but then they continue curiously.] What are your favorites to read? Non-fiction only?

I have found a few bits of fiction I enjoy, but most fiction is...well.

[How does he explain it?]

I think I've read a few too many books of "a man goes on an adventure, saves the world, and gets the girl." Or "a girl grows to be a dutiable wife and marries a good man." A little more variety that isn't just "they all die or suffer horrible fates" would be nice.

Perhaps you've been reading the wrong literature? [they sound amused, slightly.] It's never that simple anyway.

But what would qualify as a tolerable fate?

Maybe instead of falling in love and getting married, the male and female leads become good friends and stay as such for the rest of their days.

And what about stories without that sort of friendship at all?

Those aren't very common, but I do appreciate them when I see them.
