Hmm. It's the same for me, though, 'working with' often means working against. "Know thy enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated", and all of that, though, I'd argue you need to know your allies just as well.
[ playfully - ] You did just say I was meant for something simple!
[ but, joking aside, he gets it. ] The mind is a weapon in and of its own, I believe, no matter where you are. Letting such a thing fall flat is akin to dulling a sword's edge.
A parrot! Did you interrogate it? My second-in-command has the most dreadful parrot in the world. Can't stand the creature - I can't imagine it was helpful!
looks like he's .5 seconds from losing his mind laughing but he is trying not to TOTALLY be rude. he's covering his mouth and staring at him, eyes wide, face just gleeful and not saying anything because if he opens his mouth he's going to lose his marbles. ]
All the more reason it would benefit you to look twice at your evidence that you abandon so early, and let go of the evidence you waste so much time on.
If we get a parrot to interrogate, I promise you, I will spend an appropriate amount of time interrogating it.
[ .....
ok he's done he pffffts into his hand and muffles his laughter, which comes immediately. ]
Ahhh. I know, I know. It's good advice! We all need it, we get so very turned around - then again, solving a case in nine hours is quite difficult! Hahaha....
Haha. Is it surprising if I tell you you're not the first person to tell me something like that?
[ it.
it really isn't, no. ]
But, I do believe you're right. I think each week we've failed, I've spent some time dissecting what we did and didn't find, and usually am able to draw different conclusions. I try to take notes.
[ despite seeming frivolous.... he is actually a good student........ ] The one I'm still utterly baffled on is whatever happened to Kaz, but I've decided to wipe it from my memory until further notice.
[ hmmm. gu yun looks thoughtful, drumming his fingers on the table. ]
For trials, at least, I'm using them to track information - particularly matches to the evidence checks, injuries or a lack thereof that seem a bit off, and to the usage and naming of powers as they're available. I already know that there are others floating around besides the ones that have been named [ his favoritism, ] but, I want to keep track of what people have and haven't admitted to, particularly as next week, they will expire and begin anew.
I tried finding a connection to the way the powers were assigned, and didn't find much. I think mine is likely related to Wrath, if only because of the title. [ he read "the power of god and anime" and was like "i don't know what this means but i heard it in lup's voice" tbh ] But, assuming that people were truthful, I've pulled out a list of people who got away with not speaking up, and I plan on cross-referencing it in the week to come.
[ which. hopefully will become useful. who knows. ] I have a suspicion as to who might have committed a killing, but I'm not sure which - only some possible evidence, and what my gut tells me.
...as for the place itself, I've learned some things here and there. I've started to investigate this week, while I can. [ while he's still able to. ]
You must also work under the idea that it's possible people will lie or withhold information if they think it will benefit them.
[but that doesn't seem to be a wrong approach given greed is thinking this over.]
...logic is the priority, but "your gut" can be a decent start, if necessary. It will at least help you eliminate leads as you find them, in addition to your own cross-checking and referencing.

Observations, then? Of behavior over time?

I suppose you could say that. Consider it part of the job to understand the people I'm working with.

You and I fight severely different battles, Gu Yun. But the philosophy is similar enough.

The most ridiculous here, or the most ridiculous there? There aren't many things that top the defense cross-examining a parrot.

Perhaps that's for the best. Have your notes provided you with insight about everything else that's useful?

Hmm. On trials? Or on this place as a whole?
