I think so. [ grace is only going off of the hint greed gave her, but she's not gonna say that. instead she looks up to see what despair is staring at before she comes closer, taking out a red half mask from her pouch. it is undamaged! she's taken good care of it. ]
I found this last Thursday in some...weird hotel. Is it yours?
[they start to reach out, but they stop themselves-- the claws on their hands are long enough they'll just scratch grace if they grab it from her hands, though their fingers tense like they want to do exactly that.]
I had half-wondered if any of you would think to return it correctly... [and they want to leave it there so badly. they fully intend to end the sentence. but they have to be nice, They Have To.] But I suppose you are better at taking hints than others.
[ she holds it out for them to take, palm down so there's no risk of scratching either grace or the mask accidentally. she has worked with claw people ]
Well, a lot of people here are kind of stupid. [ it's only somewhat a joke, and she shrugs a shoulder ] Besides, I had a mask back on the train too. It sucks losing a good one, they're so hard to find.
[ she knows this mask is more sentimental than that-- or, well, guesses based on magic feelings, but she figures despair is not likely to appreciate being called out on caring ]
It was a raid mask. It helped protect my face from debris and stuff like that, and from getting recognized if I was doing recon. [ a beat ] Plus it looked cool, and I like looking good. [ she isn't even pretending not to be full of herself. ]
A symbol of my station. In our society, masks such as this identified... I suppose calling ourselves the leaders is the most direct way to phrase it, or at least the most understandable.
As such, it is something of import.
[they reach into their robes, and they remove a small piece of raw, deep purple crystal, holding it out to her. it catches the light well despite not being a cut stone, still translucent and bright.]
You may take this in exchange; I do believe you may find some use for it.
So it's a status symbol. That's cool! Good thing I'm the one who found it.
[ vs. douman. and then she looks appropriately intrigued by the crystal, because like. it's very pretty? it's pretty and she likes shiny things. she reaches out for it and brings it up to the light, watching how it catches it ]
Oooh. Thanks! What does it do? Besides being pretty.
It will not have its full power; this contains only a fragment of the original spell. But what is within it should suffice to let you destroy one object completely.
Cool. Thanks. [ she twirls it around for a bit before putting it in her pouch ] I'm just curious, so tell me if you don't want to answer. But were you a leader like... army leader, or more like some kind of monarchy?
Neither. Our positions were for guidance, not command or judgment; each was given the symbol of a constellation in our sky, for just as the stars' light shone down upon the world, so too were we meant to be guiding lights for our people. We would take on the name associated with our position, as a sign of our own dedication.
Huh. Sort of like how you represent a sin now as an Avatar? [ she peers at the mask a little. or where it used to be ig ] So the masks referenced the constellation you symbolized, then?
Something like that, yes, although the masks are more to distinguish each of us than they are related to the constellation. They are two separate symbols.
But basically it marks you as special and worthy of being followed? [ huh. she tilts her head ] Which constellation were you? Hmm. Though I guess there's no telling if I even know it.

[despair does not think much of a lot of them. but they take the mask, cautiously, ensuring they don't damage it as they tuck it into their robes.]
One which served a purpose beyond hiding your face, or simply one you chose to use?

What about yours?
