[To his credit, he doesn't say anything like "well, you could have told us that clearly". If they had, he (and likely others) would have dismissed it as a lie anyway. Even now, all he can do is watch them quietly as he considers what they're saying.
He could spell out all of the reasons for his mistrust, no matter how earnest they seem to be. The hoods, the vague non-answers, the unexplained noises, these mysterious rules--not to mention the fact that he's never heard of a selfless offer of power in his life, no matter how ready he is to accept it regardless.
He could say all of that. But it hardly matters, does it? At the end of the day, he won't ever fully believe them, and he can't even bring himself to wish that he could. If he could, that would mean he still had one more scrap of naivety clinging to his heart. Foolish.
He doesn't want Lust upset with him, though. And if he can't give them the trust they want, then the best he can do is be honest enough not to lie and pretend that he can.
He taps idly on the bottle, thinking over his words. They could go around in circles about this all night, but he sought them out to apologize, not argue further. Still, he can at least try and help them understand where he's coming from. Trusting them, in a way, with his thoughts.
